FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The REAL ID deadline creeps closer, as does the summer vacation travel rush. The deadline for the new ID requirement is May 7, 2025.
The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005. It was a recommendation from the 9/11 commission. REAL ID is a minimum national requirement for state IDs and driver's licenses. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the REAL ID is to be more consistent on secure.
