A prescription for plastic waste

In a recent study, Johnson et al. demonstrated a potentially generalizable strategy to bioremediate and upcycle plastic waste by interfacing a chemical reaction not typically found in nature with Escherichia coli. They further applied this approach to synthesize paracetamol (acetaminophen), one of the most widely used over-the-counter active pharmaceutical ingredients.
