NEW YORK CITY — Three of the 193 lots in Swann Auction Galleries’ April 3 African American art sale were the work of John Biggers (1924-2001), including the sale’s top lot: “Death and Resurrection,” which achieved $197,000, including the buyer’s premium. The 40-by-60-inch oil on linen canvas composition, painted during what the catalog called “the artist’s twilight years,” manifested the culmination of his study of African cultural practice.
