Germany’s Machinery Slump Is a Warning for Industrial Supply Chains

Germany’s manufacturing numbers look better until you examine what is actually generating them.Real manufacturing orders increased 2.5 percent in July compared with June, according to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office. But remove large-scale orders and the direction reverses: orders fell 1.4 percent. The difference is extraordinary. Orders in “other transport equipment” — aircraft, ships, trains, and military vehicles — jumped 126.4 percent in a single mont
