Claudia Cardinale – looks and intelligence

Claudia Cardinale who has died aged 87, had looks, smouldering Italian intensity  and a  quirky intelligence which made her prized by European directors for Rocco and His Brothers,  Girl with a Suitcase, Visconti’s The Leopard and Federico Fellini’s 8½. She was then persuaded over to Hollywood for The Pink Panther opposite David Niven; and went onto make many other hits including the Sergio Leone Western Once Upon a Time in the West and Werner Herzog’s Fit
