Planned Gabriola-Nanaimo ferries receive Snuneymuxw names

Two new hybrid electric ferries that will shuttle passengers between Gabriola Island and Nanaimo harbour will draw on local First Nations culture for their names.
In a press release, B.C. Ferries announced that the two vessels, anticipated to be operating by 2027, will be named Island Xwsaluxul (pronounced Xwus-wol-ox-wutl) meaning grassy place, and Island Sarlequun (pronounced Sar-le-kwun) in a nod to “the revered first peoples of Snuneymuxw.” The names carry “deep significanc
